A brass arc floor lamp with a white drum shade lit over the end of a linen sofa in a living room with deep teal walls.

Every living room has one corner the ceiling light never quite reaches. It is usually the corner with the armchair in it, or the end of the sofa where somebody reads, and by eight in the evening it has gone dim. A floor lamp is the simplest cure, since it asks for nothing but an outlet and a patch of floor.

Which lamp depends on what the corner is for. An arc reaches out over a sofa or a coffee table and lights it from above, like a pendant that needs no wiring. A lamp with a head that turns belongs beside a reading chair. A shade on a straight pole gives the gentle glow that makes a room lit from several low lamps feel settled after dark, and a torchiere throws its light up at the ceiling to brighten the whole room.

Then there are the lamps that double as something else, a set of shelves or a small table, and the ones that are closer to sculpture.

An arc lamp does a pendant’s job with a plug. The Dazuma stands behind or beside the sofa and sends its long black stem up and over, so the drum shade hangs above the seat cushions or the coffee table, where a ceiling fixture would be if the room had been wired for one.

The base is a disc of marble, heavy and low, and it is what lets so slim a stem lean out so far. In matte black from shade to floor, the lamp draws one clean curve against a pale wall. Set it at the end of a sectional and the whole seating area sits under its light.

Reading light should come from above and slightly behind the shoulder, and the HOMCOM is shaped for exactly that. Its pole rises straight, turns a square corner, and holds a small cone shade out over the chair. The cone turns, so the beam can be pointed down at a book or swung away toward the wall when the evening calls for something softer.

Polished gold on a white marble foot gives the lamp the glint of jewelry, and its outline is thin enough to slip in beside an armchair without crowding it. The switch is on the floor, worked with a toe, so you can turn it off without getting up.

Dark brown with gold accents

Side table, bookcase, and lamp usually claim three separate patches of floor. Here they share one. A round tower of open shelves in dark brown wood forms the base, and a classic linen shade rises from the top of it on a gold pole.

It is a clever answer for a small living room, where the end of the sofa has space for one piece of furniture. Paperbacks, a plant, and the remote controls go on the shelves, a cup of tea goes on top, and the light falls where you are sitting. The long cord gives some freedom over which wall it stands against.

Distressed gold leaf, applied by hand

Hollywood Regency decorators loved a faux bamboo pole, and the EUO revives the idea in full. The whole stem is shaped in knuckled bamboo joints and finished in a distressed gold leaf, so it catches the light like an old picture frame. A plain white linen drum shade on top keeps the effect from tipping into costume. A lamp of this kind is furniture for the eye as much as a source of light. Stand it beside a velvet sofa or in a bedroom corner with a chinoiserie print nearby, and it brings a little glamour with it.

Five rings balance one on top of another, each tilted a little off the last, like a juggler’s hoops caught in mid-air. Switched off, the Dazuma is a piece of black sculpture. Switched on, the inner face of every ring glows warm white, and the whole stack becomes a column of soft light. It is a low lamp, so it works beside a media console, at the end of a hallway, or next to a bed. A touch control steps the brightness down, and turned right down it is gentle enough to leave on through a film.

From one marble base, three slender arms fan out at different heights, and each ends in a white linen drum. The effect is of a small tree of light, wide enough to spread over a whole sofa or the middle of a sectional.

This is the lamp for a living room with no ceiling fixture at all. With the three shades hung high and apart, it lights a seating area evenly, the way a chandelier would, and the black stems almost vanish against the glow. Give it room. It wants an open corner behind the seating where the arms can stretch.

A torchiere aims its light at the ceiling, which bounces it back down across the whole room, and that makes it a quick way to brighten a dim living room in the evening. The Globe Electric adds a second, smaller lamp partway up the pole, on a bendable neck, for the person in the chair beside it.

The two work separately, each on its own switch. Leave the top bowl glowing for company and bend the reading light over a crossword, or turn off the big light and keep the small one. Slim and black with white shades, it tucks behind an armchair and asks for almost no floor.

Halfway up the brass-colored stem sits a turned handle of honey-colored wood, and it gives the whole lamp the warmth of a mid-century piece found in a good vintage shop. Above it the stem divides into three curving branches, each carrying a tapered white linen shade.

Each shade can be turned on its own, so one may face the sofa, one the armchair, and one the wall, and a single lamp ends up lighting a whole conversation area. The linen softens the bulbs to an even glow. Small golden spheres mark the joints.

Pleated shades are back, and this one shows why. The fabric folds into crisp knife pleats that flare like a skirt, and when the lamp is on, every fold shows as a soft stripe of light and shadow.

The stem beneath it is wood in a deep walnut finish, banded in brass tones and rising from a golden foot, before a slim neck bends over at the top to hold the shade at a tilt. It is a lamp with the manners of an old library, at home beside a leather chair, a writing desk, or a bed with a tall headboard.

The legs are borrowed from a surveyor’s tripod, in pale weathered wood with black fittings, and between them hangs a small round shelf. It is just big enough for a mug and a paperback, or a trailing plant, so the lamp serves as its own side table.

Up top, a wide drum shade in a loosely woven fabric glows the color of straw. The tripod can be set tall or short, so the lamp may stand over an armchair or drop to the scale of a low lounge chair. It suits rooms with linen, jute, and bare floorboards.

Seaside Village wraps its shade twice. Outside is a cage of woven rattan in a zigzag pattern, and inside it a plain fabric drum, so the light comes through softened and the weave shows in silhouette. The shade hangs from a black arched pole and swivels, which lets you aim it over a sofa arm or tip it toward a book. With the fabric liner lifted out, the bulb shines straight through the rattan. It is a natural partner for a room with a jute rug, potted palms, and pale upholstery.

Borrowed from the photographer’s studio, the lamp is a wide glowing disc held in a black metal hoop on three long legs. It looks like a spotlight, and it behaves like one too. The disc pivots in its ring, so it can face the room, wash a wall, or tilt up toward the ceiling.

Aim it at a white wall and the light that comes back is broad and even, a lovely way to light a room for an evening with friends. In daylight it holds its own as an object, a bold black outline for a loft, a studio, or a plain modern living room.

Bulbs, Cords, and Where to Stand It

Most of these lamps take a standard screw-in bulb that is sold separately, so check the maximum wattage in the details and choose a warm white LED within it. Look at where the switch is, too, since a switch on the cord, pressed with a toe, suits a lamp that stands behind furniture. An arc lamp needs clear space above the seat it reaches over, and any lamp is safest with its cord run along the wall instead of across a walkway.
