Comforters Chosen by Fill and Warmth

Seven comforters chosen by what they are filled with, and by the kind of bed each one makes, from tall white down to flat, quilted wool.

A queen bed with a lofted white comforter and an ochre throw, against deep teal walls and a rust linen headboard.

A comforter does two jobs. At night it decides whether you sleep warm, cool, or tangled, and by day it is most of what you see when you look at the bed. Both come down to what it is filled with.

A down comforter has height, the tall, cloud-like bed of a good hotel. Wool lies flatter and suits people who like some weight without bulk. Silk is thinner again and drapes like a heavy sheet, and polyester fills imitate down at a price that makes sense for a guest room. Each makes a different-looking bed, so it is worth picturing the one you want before you choose.

Then think about washing. A comforter that goes in the machine can be used bare, while one that can’t lives inside a duvet cover, which is no hardship, since the cover is where the color and pattern come from.

If you like the idea of sleeping under wool, as people did for centuries before polyester, the myMerino is the comforter to look at. The fill is organic Merino and the cover is organic cotton sateen, so everything on the bed is a natural fiber. It is quilted in wide squares and lies flatter than a puffy duvet, which gives a made bed a calm, tailored look. Keep it inside a linen duvet cover, which is how it is meant to be looked after.

Wool for everyday life, the myComforter can go in the washing machine. That makes it the one for a bed that gets breakfast in it, a dog on it, or a child climbing in at six in the morning. It has the flat, quilted look of a traditional wool comforter under a smooth cotton sateen cover, and it is happy with or without a duvet cover.

Care
Machine washable

A lighter weight of washable wool, it is the comforter for people who kick the covers off, and for bedrooms that are warm by the time the heating has been on an hour. It is thin enough to fold at the foot of the bed like a quilt, and in spring and autumn it can be the only layer. We’d pair it with a cotton blanket and use the two together in winter.

This is the cloud. Goose down gives a comforter its height, and the C&W is sewn in deep squares that puff up like a hotel bed in a film. If your idea of a made bed is tall, white, and inviting, down is still the way to get it. Dress it in a crisp white cover, add two rows of pillows, and stop there.

It helps to own one comforter nobody has to worry about, and this is it. It is filled with polyester made to feel like down, it goes in the washing machine, and it is the obvious choice for a guest room, a child’s bed, or a first apartment. Tabs at the corners tie it inside a duvet cover, so you can change the look with the season, flannel checks in winter and striped cotton in summer.

Mommesilk Silk Comforter

Dimensions & details
Size
87 x 90 in (queen)
Fill
Silk, 1.5 kg
Cover
Cotton

Silk makes a different kind of comforter, thin, smooth, and close to the body, more like a heavy sheet than a duvet. The Mommesilk lies flat over the bed, which looks elegant on a low, simply made bed with satin pillowcases. It is for someone who finds a puffy comforter too much and wants bedding that feels light.

SweetNight CoolNest Cooling Comforter

SweetNight CoolNest Cooling Comforter
For Hot Sleepers
Dimensions & details
Shell
Nylon and spandex
Fill
Viscose, Sorona fiber, and polyester
Color
Navy

The deep navy shell with its satin sheen is meant to be seen, so the CoolNest is used without a cover. It is made for people who sleep hot, in a smooth, silky fabric SweetNight developed for that purpose. On the bed it gives a dark, glossy, hotel suite look that suits a moody bedroom with charcoal walls and brass lamps. Make the bed tightly and let the sheen catch the light.

Washing and Keeping It Clean

A duvet cover takes the everyday wear and goes in the wash weekly, so the comforter itself needs cleaning only a few times a year. Corner loops or tabs tie the comforter into the corners of the cover so it doesn’t slide into a lump at the foot of the bed. For a bed used by guests, washable fill matters more.
