A bedroom closet painted red inside and fitted with a slim floating desk and a black wooden chair.

Most homes have room for a desk, just not where you’d expect. The corner by the window, the closet nobody uses, and the stretch of bedroom wall between the dresser and the door will each take one, as long as the desk is chosen for that spot.

In a small home the desk is always on show, so it has to look like furniture. A white writing table with gold legs belongs in a bedroom. A ladder desk passes for a bookshelf in a living room. A desk that folds flat or closes like a cabinet disappears when the work is done.

Depth matters more than width, since every bit of it comes out of the walkway in front.

A corner is the part of a bedroom that usually holds a laundry basket, and this desk is cut to fit into it, a triangle with its point in the corner and its long edge facing you. In white and pale oak with mustard yellow handles, it is a cheerful piece that looks like furniture, not office equipment, and the drawers down one side mean it can double as a dressing table. Put a small lamp at the back and a chair you like in front.

When the working day ends, the HOMCOM folds flat and goes behind a door. Open, it is a simple black table with a raised shelf for a laptop or screen, and it is the answer for a reach-in closet converted into a work nook, a guest room, or a studio where a permanent desk would always be in the way. It is plain and practical, and nobody will see it at the weekend.

A writing table in the old sense, the Tribesigns is white with gold legs and gold handles, pretty enough to stand in a bedroom or a living room. It is shallow, so it sits against a wall without jutting into the room, and the two drawers swallow the chargers and paperwork at the end of the day. With a mirror propped on top it would double as a dressing table. Add a velvet chair and a small brass lamp.

Hung on the wall, the Prepac takes up no floor at all, and the space underneath stays free for a stool or a basket. The work surface sits inside a frame of shelves and cubbies, so the books, the printer paper, and the pen pot all have a place on the wall too. In black it makes a strong shape, something like a piece of built-in joinery, and it suits a hallway nook or a stretch of living room wall.

A desk on wheels goes where you are, beside the sofa in the evening, by the window in the morning, into a closet at the weekend. This one also goes up and down, so it works for sitting or standing, and it has a spot for charging a phone built into the top. The grey wood-look top and black frame are plain and workmanlike. It is a useful second desk as much as a first.

Closed, this is a slim wooden cabinet on the wall. Open the front and it drops down into a desk, with rows of little shelves and pigeonholes behind it like an old writing bureau. It is a clever piece for a studio or a guest room, since the work can be shut away with everything still inside. The dark mahogany finish has a traditional look that goes with older furniture.

A ladder desk leans its storage up the wall, with two shelves above a small desk and a drawer. In white it looks more like a bookshelf than an office, which is what you want in a living room. It is the place for a laptop, a lamp, and a plant, with books above, and it fits the narrow strip of wall beside a window or a door.

The Float Mini is a desk reduced to a top and a column, in bamboo and white, from the office furniture maker Humanscale. It rises from sitting height to standing height, and it is narrow enough to stand beside an armchair or at the end of a sofa like a side table. For someone who works on a laptop and wants one good-looking object in the room and no more, it is the one.

When a Wall-Mounted Desk Makes Sense

Floating and fold-down desks free up the floor, which makes a small room feel bigger. They suit a laptop and a notebook more than a heavy monitor setup, and both types need to be fixed into studs. Renters should check their lease first, or choose a folding or rolling desk that can move out with them.
