A slim wood console table with a lamp along a hall of dark slate-gray paneling and a limestone floor, with a clear walkway beside it.

A console table is the hall’s one chance at a first impression. It is where the keys land and the mail piles up, but it is also where a lamp, a mirror, and a vase of something from the garden tell a visitor what kind of house this is.

In a narrow hall the table has to be shallow. After that, the choice is about character. Glass and thin metal keep a small entry feeling open. Solid wood and thick legs give a plain wall some weight. Drawers hide the clutter and shelves put it on show.

Think about what will stand on it, too. A table that carries a pair of lamps wants length, and one that holds only a dish for keys can be very slight. Several of these also work behind a sofa, where a console gives you a surface for a reading lamp.

A thin black steel frame, a plank of wood on top, and almost nothing else, the Yamazaki is a console reduced to a line drawing. It is made for the hall where you had given up on furniture, and it gives you a place for keys and mail without seeming to take up any room. The hooks that come with it hang from the frame, so the tote bag and the umbrella get a home too.

Lean a small mirror on top, add a dish for keys, and stop there. It suits the pared-back look of a Scandinavian or Japanese-style apartment.

The big circle cut through the base is the reason to buy this table. It turns a plain, pale wood console into a piece of sculpture, and because you can see the wall and floor through it, the solid base never looks heavy. Echo the curve with a round mirror above and you have an entry that looks designed. In its light oak tone it would sit happily with cream walls, a jute runner, and a bowl of something green.

Glass and gold make a console that hardly seems to be there. You see straight through the top and the two shelves to the wall behind, so the table almost disappears and what you put on it appears to float. The stepped middle shelf leaves a tall space at one side, the obvious home for a big vase of branches.

It has some Hollywood glamour, which a gilt mirror or a patterned wallpaper would play up. In a living room it makes a good bar, since decanters and glasses look very well on glass.

This is the table for the spot where the phones get charged. A power strip is set into the top, so the lamp, the phone, and the speaker all plug in at the table and the tangle of chargers leaves the kitchen counter. The top is a patchwork of rustic brown and black on a thin black frame, an industrial look that suits a hallway with exposed brick or a home office wall. Behind a sofa it becomes the place to plug in a reading lamp and a laptop.

Two thick planks joined by a curved upright at one end, the table is a letter C lying on its side. It is closer to a piece of rustic sculpture than a hall table, with the knots and grain of the wood left in view, and it wants a simple setting to show it off, white walls, a stone floor, a lamp with a linen shade. The lower plank is a shelf in its own right, a good place for a stack of big books or a pair of boots by the door.

A Parsons-style table has top and legs the same thickness, here all in one walnut tone, and that plainness is why it works. It gives a hall a strong, simple shape and then gets out of the way of whatever you put on it, a pair of lamps, a row of framed photos, a big bowl. The warm brown is a good partner for cream walls and brass, and it would be as useful behind a sofa as by the front door.

The top curves down into the sides in one smooth bend, a waterfall edge that makes a storage piece look soft and expensive. Three drawers hide in the front with no handles to interrupt it, so the keys, the dog’s lead, and the mail all vanish and the hall stays calm.

In a pale natural wood tone it is a natural for a Scandinavian or Japandi home. Put a paper lantern lamp and a low bowl on top and a pair of baskets on the shelf below.

Every surface of this table is mirrored, and the two curved supports are filled with panels that glitter, so it suits someone who wants a hallway with sparkle. It is pure glamour, at home in an entry with a chandelier, a silver-framed mirror, and a vase of white flowers. A lamp on top is reflected in the glass beneath it, a pretty effect in the evening.

Black, with slatted sides, the HOMCOM has the look of Mission furniture, plain and sturdy. It is the family hall table, the one that can take baskets of hats and gloves, a row of shoes, and the school bags without looking put upon. Against a white wall it makes a strong graphic shape, and a lamp with a pale shade on top stops it looking heavy.

The long Tribesigns table looks like something from a boutique hotel lobby. Fluted drawer fronts add texture without adding color, chunky legs give it presence, and the warm wood tone keeps it friendly. It is long enough to carry a proper arrangement, a lamp at one end, a stack of books, a big branch in a vase, with room left for the keys.

The useful secret of this table is that it folds flat. That makes it a good one to own if you entertain, a drinks table for a party, a serving table at Thanksgiving, a desk when someone comes to stay, and then back in the closet. Opened up, it doesn’t look like folding furniture, with X-braced black metal sides and a dark wood-effect top. Dress it with a cloth for a buffet or leave it bare as a hall table.

Low and very long, the table is made to run along the back of a sofa that floats in the middle of a room. It gives you the surface a sofa never has, for a lamp to read by, a drink, and the remote. In a warm farmhouse wood tone, it also makes a good media console under a wall-mounted television.

Here is the open, see-through kind of console, more shelf unit than table, with rustic brown shelves on thin black steel. It is one for display. A lamp and a plant on top, books in the middle, and a basket at the bottom would fill it without hiding the wall behind. The industrial look suits a loft or a hallway with dark floors.

Measuring for a Console Table

Measure the hall from wall to wall where it is tightest, then subtract the table’s depth to see how much walkway is left. A baseboard or a radiator adds to the distance the table sits from the wall, so measure at table height as well.

Door swing matters as much as walkway width: a table beside a door that opens inward has to stay clear of the arc. For a table with drawers, leave room in front to pull them out.
